“Witnesses said the Klansmen used the point of a flagpole as a weapon while fighting with protesters”
HWH Comment: Years ago in Cleveland, Ohio the KKK staged a rally. The security was so stringent that people planning on attending were not even allowed to bring their car keys to the rally. A woman in a wheelchair was refused entrance, because the FBI said she could use the wheelchair as a weapon and throw it up on stage at the Klansmen.
Yet the Klansmen were allowed to strut up and down the stage waving their huge flag poles with what looked like spears at the tips of them. I recall writing a short article about the unfairness in the way the crowdspeople were scrutinized compared to the Klansmen on stage.
Why was it okay for the Klansmen – in hoods so nobody could identify them – to bear arms, brandishing them on stage, walking up and down the stage, doing all kinds of gyrations with them, yet the crowdspeople were notified in advance via the media that they couldn’t even take their car keys to the rally, because they could be used as weapons?
I argued that the spears flaunted by these unidentified Klanspeople could also we used as weapons. All one of them would have to do is throw it into the crowd with the intent to do harm. I mean come on, somebody with multiple sclerosis gets booted from the rally because she might be able to get her feeble self out of the chair, lift it up and throw it all the way to the stage with the intent of harming a Klansperson? A car key a weapon? A wheelchair a weapon? If so, then the flag spears were also weapons.
Well you can probably guess that the FBI at the time did not appreciate that article I wrote. Still, both sides should have been treated equally.
Now comes another rally, many years later, absent a police presence (according to news accounts) till the violence broke out – (are you kidding me – in today’s racial climate? no police presence?) and guess what? the Klansmen used their flag bearing spears as weapons!!!
No more flag poles at rallys. Let them wear their flags on their persons. And the police need to reassess probabilities of violence anywhere the KKK shows up. Protect the crowd and those exercising their speech freedom rights.
