Hispanic vs. Latino: what’s the difference?

HWH: If you’re confused over who is called Hispanic and who is  called Latino you have lots of company. Even those who are Hispanic and/or Latino can’t agree. The comments to this article will leave you even more confused.

Difference between Latin America and Central America

…South America is a geographical entity: the subcontinent or continent south of Central America.

Latin America is a cultural entity: countries in the Americas where a Latin language is spoken (Spanish, Portuguese, French). The geographical notion is very clear: South America ranges from the Panama Isthmus to Cape Horn.

Hispanic vs. Latino: what’s the difference?

Many people use Hispanic and Latino as interchangeable words. They’re not. While there is a huge overlap between the two, they don’t mean the same thing and cannot be used as if they do. This is an easy mistake to make, and I do it myself every once in a while (often from laziness), but it’s important to note the differences.Hispanic refers to language.

Latino refers to geography.Basically, you are Hispanic if you and/or your ancestry come from a country where they speak Spanish. You are Latino if you and/or your ancestry come from a Latin American country.

But wait… isn’t that the same thing?

No, dear friend, it’s not.

Hispanic excludes the nearly 200 million Brazilians who, while accurately labelled Latinos, speak Portuguese. They are Latinos, they are not Hispanic.

Hispanic includes the nearly 50 million Spaniards (population of Spain) who could never be called Latinos.

When picking which one to use you have to know what you’re trying to say. For HispanicHouston.com we used language as the guide, and we ended up with Hispanic instead of Latino. A weird decision if you consider that we also decided not to have the site in Spanish. (But that’s another soapbox for another day.)

So, as a Mexican American, I am Hispanic and Latina. Brazilian Americans are Latinos but not Hispanic. And, Spanish Americans are Hispanic but not Latinos.

Is that clear as mud now?

Mexico is part of North America. Which is part of the Americas.

North America is comprised by:

• Canada

• United States

• Mexico

• Caribbean nations

Just because it has brown people and its poor doesn’t means it’s not in the same zone of the Americas as the United States.

There is no such thing as Middle America, it’s called Central America and it comprises:

• Belize

• Guatemala

• El Salvador

• Costa Rica

• Honuras

• Nicaragua

• Panama

Tax-Free Drugs? Why do you allow it?

Send an estimated tax bill to Mexico based on the estimated amount of illegal drugs pumped into the United States for commercial purposes. Make it retroactive.

All politicians in Mexico benefit from the illegal dumping of drugs into the United States. They created the need for a wall, since crime hitches a ride wherever drugs are sent.

Then tax every Central and South American country commensurate with their involvement in the illegal drug trade.

Do it and do it now. Matters are getting worse not better. No action shows weakness.

Leave the American Indian lands alone. That’ll be the only illegal entry door, unless they set up check points. If they don’t want the wall, then let them deal with the drugs and the crime that comes with it. It’s their land.

Turn tobacco fields into marijuana fields. No monopolies or big tobacco squeezing out the Mom and Pop operations.

Politicians need to get out-of-the-way of progress. Marijuana is not a gateway drug. Coffee is. Over the counter pain medications are. Stop the insanity. Focus on hard drugs not soft ones. How many OTC pain meds are sold each year? It appears America is already addicted to OTC drugs. Make them illegal and see what happens. Put your thinking caps on – if you still have one.

Stop letting other countries force us into buying their products via threats of violence. If they want us to buy, then they meet our standards for safety, not theirs.

Politicians are lazy. The only talent they exhibit is their ability to delay till the next election cycle, then it starts all over again – empty promises.

Let’s see how fast you can work. You’re always demanding it of everybody else. Now you’re up. Speedy Gonzalez. Who is that anyway? Ándale! Ándale!

Some Issues To Consider On Immigration Reform

In the current immigration debate:

Peoples wanting to enter the USA from all corners of the planet say it’s just like hundreds of years ago when immigrants came to America from Europe, with a pittance in their pockets, so open your God-damned doors before we huff and puff and blow your doors down.

No it isn’t the same.

Those immigrants were coming into a wilderness – a massive area of undeveloped land not built for habitation yet. There is a world of difference. They came ready to build, not to tear down or game the system to only their benefit. There wasn’t a system to game.

Immigrants today come to a nation already made to order, already established – the suffering of making that nation done by the predecessors of those who live here, not by the ancestors of the new immigrant. That reality must be respected during all talks.

Simply to say it’s a big country, there’s enough room for everyone under this massive tent, is naive.

Try putting three hundred million plus people under one tent and see what happens. It didn’t work in your own country, don’t try to force it on the country you want to enter to call your own.

It’s not your tent. It’s a country. It’s not a boat nor a pot. People don’t melt. They haven’t melted yet, so what makes you think that you’re coming to a melting pot?

Are you going to assimilate? No. You won’t. That’s what melt means. It means assimilate into a new culture. You won’t leave your culture of abuse against women and children behind. You won’t leave your culture of prejudice against all other animals and all other ethnicities of humans, except your own, behind. You won’t leave your authoritarian politics behind. You won’t leave your resistance to anything American and anything White American behind.

You want only the money opportunity.

Are you ready to build a country, a better country? No. You’re ready to make a country bleed, so when the war is over you can call it yours.

It’s that war mentality that this country does not want nor need. Make a war in the country you want to leave if that’s your mindset – stay there and make war. Don’t come here and war against the country that you expect in advance to meet all the demands that your own country of origin failed to meet.

You need to contribute to the process of achieving your goals. If you’re not that kind of person, then free-load some place else. There’s a reason why your country doesn’t want you – you’re high maintenance.

Just because you can get on a plane, on a boat or jump a fence doesn’t make you tough.  It doesn’t make you any more worthy than anybody else. In fact, it shows you don’t know how to plan ahead. You go to a foreign country with nothing and expect that country to take care of you without any thought of reciprocity. Any fool could do it. What’s your plan? Stay low so nobody knows you’re here? What kind of life is that? Always living outside the law. Always blaming everybody else for your woes: first you blame your country of origin then you blame the country you came to.

In my view, the law must apply equally to all those living or visiting within our borders, or to no one within our borders.

The law, all laws, must apply to everyone or to no one.

Get rid of the phrase cherry-picking. It’s old, worn out, tired. People aren’t cherries, ideas aren’t cherries. Get with it or don’t run for office next time around. You didn’t stay current, you didn’t seek solutions, you sought only to postpone forever. Pass a law, then let only certain people, certain populations, break it with impunity? Everybody else has to obey it? That’s just plain stupid. Lazy too. Ignorant.

The USA needs a new Naturalization Act.

Everybody (regardless of age, religion, handicap, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, language etc. and who is not currently in the judicial or penal system) who has lived in the United States for five years with the intent of staying in the United States becomes a United States citizen with all benefits afforded all other citizens, with one exception: dual citizenship to another country is not allowed – no matter the country.

You don’t need to speak the language, but you need to obey the laws like all other citizens. Not speaking English is not a viable defense.

THE WALL IS IRRELEVANT

The only reason the political establishment doesn’t want a wall along the border with Mexico is because when the jobs come back from China, the USA will need a slave labor force from South of the border to fill those jobs – according to Donald Trump’s real plan that he doesn’t let you see, because you’ve got gold in your eyes, that the magician put there. He knows he won’t build that wall. Otherwise he would have already done it.

Why do you think there are eleven million illegal immigrants already in the USA? That didn’t happen overnight. Wealthy people and businesses wanted cheap labor. Now they go into countries that have fewer regulations, and get their cheap labor there.

Undocumented with no path to citizenship means nobody knows they’re here, so we can pay them as little as we want.

How is it that we know there are eleven million, if nobody knows who or where they are or whom they work for?

Big business caused this problem, let them solve it. Or tell congress to close the back door to businesses that promote slavery in the USA.

Let any one of these wealthy people try to raise a family on minimum wage, or even just themselves. Try living on minimum wage for three months. See if you can afford health insurance, clothes, a car to go to work, food, furniture, an education. You can’t keep expecting ten people to live in one small house.

Drugs will get into the USA with or without a wall. Drugs get into prisons. Prisons have many walls and cages.

Why do you think Mexico doesn’t want a wall? Because they want their poor people, undereducated people, criminals, out of their country. When illegal immigrants funnel money back into Mexico to their families, then so much the better for Mexico. It means the Mexican government doesn’t have to raise their own standard of living.

Even if the USA paid for the wall, the Mexican government still wouldn’t want it.

What, Mexico is too poor to build their own factories? China is too poor to build their own factories? India? The Philippines? USA businesses need to go into their countries and do it for them?

You can’t fit all the poor people of the world into the USA. Our land mass couldn’t sustain it. We can’t afford to fix our own infrastructure now. Contaminated water is a problem in the USA now. What’s Obama and congress doing about it? Nothing of substance. It’s up to the states – you know, those 50 individual, sovereign nations under the umbrella of the Federal government, that want fewer regulations.

So where does that leave the populace?

Somebody is telling a big, fat, convoluted, complicated lie with layer upon layer of deception. Why aren’t we hearing from the businesses that outsource? Because they don’t have to talk to the American people they hurt. They talk through the back door of congress. Your elected officials are the middle people in all these back door deals, and they’re not talking to you either.

The wall is irrelevant.
