They have an insect problem that’s even worse than the trash problem. There’s a new, aggressive manager who’s working day and night to fix decades old issues, caused by past managers plus contributed to by uncooperative tenants. Now a more dangerous precedent; they’re allowing large dogs and pitbulls, and the bulding is flooded with them. Off the leash, not muzzled. People in wheelchairs and walkers can’t defend themselves. My small dog was charged and nipped; my husband was charged when the elevator door opened by another pit. It’s turning into a real ghetto building. I’ll check out the story. Thanks, Someone
Just saw the News story Cleveland 19 published September 12, 2023 Cleveland Tenants at Senior Apartments building want Permanent solution to trash problem. It’s was regarding Kirby Manor, seems deployable this was happening for months and nothing happened until the News people stepped in so sad, you should do a commentary post about it.
Will do. Thanks for the assist on my next move. Appreciate it.
That’s excellent to hear, one of those organizations, may be able to contact the National Church Residents, if you submit to them what you have wrote here, I definitely wish you the best in your pursuit to address the injustices, I will continue to look for updates as you continue on this journey to help all residents to live in a safe, clean environment free of abuse.
Your thoughts and opinions are helpful and your professionalism impressive. With your permission I’ll print your comment with the department names in Ohio (plus their addresses and phone numbers and web addresses) and begin circulating them to people with whom I’m familiar. I already sent to the main office of National Church Residences in Columbus, Ohio a Cease and Desist notice by signature-required mail . They received it nearly a month ago and still no response. Although I didn’t ask for a response, they should have extended that courtesy as a 15 year tenant, having never made a complaint about another tenant. Complaints regarding office personnel are more serious, since their practices affect every tenant. Sharon
Thank you for responding to my comment, it definitely seems they have a practice of violating the rights of the disabled and seniors, what appears to amount to nothing short of elder abuse especially violating Ohio’s tenants rights and entering seniors apartments without out notice and having a policy that they can enter at will any time of day or night for any reasons. There are agencies there who would enforce a seniors rights who are being abused, Adult Protective Services, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, The Elder Abuse Center in your city, The Ohio Coalition for Adult Protective Services and the National Center on Alder Abuse. You can also have a camera inside your apartment pointing at the door to capture any unlawful entries and receive alerts as a videos or picture attached sent to your smartphone as evidence, and you don’t need prior authorization since it’s inside your apartment, however I would use strong adhesive tape to attach it rather then installing it which may need authorization. Door stoppers are also a safe guard while your home to stop anyone from using a key, trying to enter unannounced through out the day or night, door stoppers can be placed at the bottom of the door. Above all your experience there is so disheartening being at a facility operating under the name a religious Faith. My thoughts and opinions.
Thank you for your concern. We contacted the police several times before they finally came out to take a statement. The police are complicit. When we call they tell us to go through the office (“have the leasing office call us”), when the leasing agents are the ones offending people. Nothing ever happens. We couldn’t even get the name of the person who pushed my husband down the stairs, so we could take out a restraining order against her, when she was evicted. We were refused, so we had no ways to legally protect ourselves. The prosecutor’s office was also verbally rude and dismissive and never did get back. So we gave up. The attorney general will rubber stamp it. A resident named Ralph Jacobson recently died upon returning from the nursing home after recovering from getting hit by a car in a crosswalk. No one investigates, because we’re seniors and we’re dying anyway. NCR does not correctly train their employees on resident rights, because they all claim they have the right to enter people’s apartments at will. Two days ago I’m in bed in the morning five minutes after my husband left for work. Someone put a key in the door and tried to enter. I thought it was him forgetting something. I could hear the chain bobbing. Luckily they couldn’t get in. We’re trying to find a new place, but rents are just too high and we’re at our maximum rent – this is our 15th year. Every year since we reached our maximum, leasing agents have used scare tactics to get us to sign a ‘new tenant’ lease, so they could raise our rent. Again thank you, but National Church Residences is too powerful an outfit, which means we have no power over who does what to us. We’re not allowed even to know worker’s names. They’re all called “the office”. If you ask their name when they try to enter, or for identification, they won’t identify themselves – no name tags, no uniforms, just “trust us”. “WE’RE OFFICE”. Complete strangers coming in from out of state. A bunch of them got fired, but the new ones coming in do the exact same thing. So, policies remain the same, the need to give a twenty-four hour notice, but the practice is still entering at will and you don’t have to be there, which means to them they can enter anytime they want to enter. “For any reason” they then add. And I can’t even tell you their names, because they didn’t tell me when I asked. Many of the tenants are alone and don’t have family. We’re on our own up against people working for a massive supposedly non-profit organization, therefore under the jurisdiction of the federal government, who think we have no rights because we’re old. Tenants complain about people entering in the middle of the night and the staff doesn’t believe them. Now someone’s dead. His wife was temporarily in a nursing home when he died. His bed clothes were still neatly laid out. He was considered a trouble maker, because he questioned the legality of what the staff were doing to tenants. He was very vocal. And appreciated for that. The leasing agent who supposedly found him first at the behest of an aid who couldn’t get in, supposedly noted that it looked like he had fallen several times. My question is what does ‘falling several times’ look like? Bloody? Furniture strew about? Age prevents an investigation by police. Like I said, he was old which means to law enforcement he’s dying anyway, so the cops couldn’t care less. Ralph got around better and more than any elder I’ve ever met. “We know what’s going on here, but we don’t want to get involved”, was one cops words to a leasing agent, while they both walked down the hall on another occasion. High acoustics lets you hear people talking in the hallway or when they walk by the door. I’m publicizing this, not because it will make anybody’s life better where I live right now, but maybe the same is happening to other seniors in other buildings, cities and states, globally even, and eventually ‘proper’ investigations will be conducted and not dismissed out of hand because it’s coming from a senior resident who for all intents and purposes is a Ward of the State, under current practices at Kirby Manor, which violate their civil rights. DO SENIORS HAVE CIVIL RIGHTS? It does not appear so in Cleveland, Ohio USA. We have a senior President of the USA with a vacant First Lady who should champion senior rights instead of trampling on those rights by ignoring them. Shame on President Biden. His people know. They come here to politick before every local election. They offer ice-cream like they’re giving children the moon calling it an ice-cream social. Yet no mayor has to my knowledge stepped up for senior rights in any way that could be construed as significant. NOBODY CARES ENOUGH. I’m looking for a leader with a conscience. I’ve yet to stumble upon one. Ever hear of a twenty-four hour notice that lasts anywhere between two days or a month? If I don’t want a stranger with no ID to enter my apartment where my service dog will be home alone, then I have to stay home for one month during leasing hours or later if they demand it, minus Sundays and some Saturdays. She’s my adopted daughter. I have papers. Would you leave your child home alone with a stranger who refuses to identify themselves entering at will? The USA doesn’t have enough enforceable ELDER LAWS. Civil Rights is a big one. Ever hear of a white person’s civil rights being violated? It happens all the time in Cleveland, Ohio. Thank you for this opportunity to elaborate, Blue Age. – May a positive force be in you always, Sharon
Thank you again Blue Age. I’ll look into it.
Also in the state of Ohio tenants rights, landlords are required by law to provide 24hr notice before entering any residents apartment, that’s why you should again consider filling a complaint with the attorney general, I bet then maintenance won’t say they have the right to enter any tenants properly when ever they choose.
Thank you for your concern.
I came across horrifying incidents happening to the elderly at Kirby Manor, which seems to be a violation of their rights under the Disability Act and their right to privacy. Based on your description of the incidents, it appears that the place is unsafe for seniors to live. You should consider filing a complaint with the Ohio attorney general for investigation.
